Aims : This study aims to evaluate the salivary electrolyte concentration in non-diabetic and diabetic patients with active dental caries. Methods and Material : 60 diabetic individuals with active dental caries were selected fulfilling the inclusion criteria as the study group with equal number as controls. 5ml of saliva was collected from the patient, centrifuged and the supernatant obtained was subjected to

The detection of salivary glucose, caries and periodontal status in diabetes ‎mellitus patients

OBJECTIVE: Oral manifestations in diabetic patients can have different causes. Possibly, one of these causes is salivary glucose. The aim of this study was to evaluate salivary glucose concentrations in patients with Type II diabetes mellitus (DM) and their association with oral and dental manifestations and compare them with normal adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this analytical study, 128 p...

Correlation of Oral Health Status and Salivary Antioxidant Capacity in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Objective: Dental caries is considered as one of the major complication of diabetes mellitus. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) demonstrate evidence of oxidant–antioxidant imbalances in their biological fluids such as saliva. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation of oral health status and salivary total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in T2DM. Materials and Methods...

Serum resistin a biomarker of type II diabetes development

Background: Resistin and ghrelin are hormones that have roles in the glucose and lipid homeostasis and weight regulation. Human studies regarding resistin and ghrelin in diabetic patients are scarce, especially in the cases of normotensive and non-obese patients. This study was designed to illuminate some of the missing points. Methods: Eighty diabetic patients and eighty healthy individuals par...

Two-year longitudinal observations of salivary status and dental caries in children with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.

Salivary status and caries incidence were studied in 28 young, Type 1 diabetics from the onset of the disease and during a two-year period. Flow rate, buffer capacity, glucose content, total protein concentration and levels of mutans streptococci and lactobacilli were determined in stimulated whole saliva every third month. Dental caries was recorded at onset and then once a year. Forty-six per...

Evaluation of the Salivary Total Antioxidant Capacity and Lipid Peroxidation Status in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients

Objective: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a multifactorial disorder with various disturbances in biochemical processes such as antioxidant status and lipid peroxidation. The aim of present study was evaluation of the oxidative stress markers in saliva of T2DM patients. Materials and Methods: In this study, 80 (40 T2DM and 40 control) individuals were assessed. The salivary total antioxidan...
